The X4 has exhausted all the annoyance I previously directed at the X3. Carry on.

I wanted to hate the X3 and then my mom bought one with the 3.5i liter. It is a fantastic car and I would recommend one to anyone looking for a smaller SUV in that price range.

I do like the d in any form. X5d, 335d, I like 'em all.

I really liked my 335d, but on US spec diesel that engine turns into a complete piece of shit.

Carbon build up is a huge and prevalent issue on these cars. It's more of a when rather than if situation. I had the intake, egr, egr cooler, MAF, and a few other sensors replaced. They also had to walnut blast the head. My car only had 32k miles on it when this happened. There were three other 335d's at the dealership for the same issue as mine. There are also lots of problems with the DEF injection system, the DDE's, and the injectors crapping out. About half the threads on E90 post in the 335d section are problems with the cars. There's a reason you can find them for much cheaper than the 335i's. The last straw on mine was the small turbo started leaking oil, and I found a bunch of oil in my intake. I decided to dump it before it depreciated any more.

Were you still under warranty? I'd be surprised if there wasn't a special extended warranty on the troublesome parts.

I was still under warranty but I didn't want to get stuck with a car that was worth nothing and had problems. BMW is pretty bad with warranty work and fixing problems. A lot of people have been denied warranty claims on these cars with BMW citing poor fuel quality rather than poorly engineered emissions systems. Luckily I have a good SA who told me right away the EGR system is designed poorly. Supposedly the new diesels use a different style egr, but their still designed for euro fuel and not the shit we have here. The only reason they extended the warranties on the 335i fuel pumps was because a bunch of owners who had money got loud. Otherwise they wouldn't have done anything.

Exactly. They sound like diesel trucks with straight pipes which is pretty cool. You'd just have to find someone to tune the engine.

BMWs should not come with tractor engines. The 328d I had for a week was peppy, but the cabin shake from the diesel engine was unacceptable.

I havent driven the 28d yet. The diesels do vibrate a bit more than petrol motors but I only really noticed it at idle. Compared to other diesels I've driven though, the BMWs seem to be quieter and smoother.

I don't have any other diesels to compare it to, but I think my V8-powered CJ vibrates less than the 328d did at idle, and my Jeep uses hockey pucks for engine mounts.
